Connect Google Tag Manager
Load your Tag Manager container on every store page and get e-commerce events in the data layer: Container ID, publishing, checking with Preview.
What it is#
Google Tag Manager (GTM) lets you manage all your tags (Analytics, ads, heat maps) in one place instead of pasting code into your store. Jukto loads your container on every page and pushes the e-commerce events into the data layer, so your tags in GTM can use them.
What you need#
- A Google Tag Manager account and a Web container.
- The Container ID, a code like GTM-XXXXXXX.
Where to find your keys#
- 1
Open your container
Sign in to tagmanager.google.com and open your account and container. If you have none, create a Web container.
- 2
Copy the Container ID
At the top of the workspace you see the Container ID, a code like GTM-XXXXXXX. Copy it.
- 3
Paste it in Jukto
Paste it into the Container ID field. You do not need to add Google's snippet to your pages: Jukto does it.
What Jukto does#
- Only the Container ID is stored, and the container loads only on your own live store, never in the editor preview.
- Jukto pushes the GA4 recommended e-commerce events into the data layer. Before each push it clears the earlier e-commerce data, and each event carries an event id.
- With a container on, Jukto does not load Google Analytics itself. Add a GA4 tag inside your container, and keep the GA4 integration only for the server purchase.
- Test connection only checks that the ID looks like GTM-XXXXXXX. Tag Manager has no connection check, so it cannot tell you the container really loads.
| Event | When it is sent |
|---|---|
| view_item_list, view_item | when a list or a product is shown |
| add_to_cart, remove_from_cart | when the cart changes |
| begin_checkout, add_shipping_info, add_payment_info | along the checkout |
| purchase | on the thank-you page |
Test and turn on#
- 1
Open the provider page
Go to Tools, open Integrations, choose Marketing & ads, then Google Tag Manager and press Set up (it says Manage once you have started).
- 2
Fill in the fields and save
Paste each value into the field with the same name, then press Save. A secret value is stored encrypted, and afterwards only its last four characters are shown.
- 3
Test the connection
Press Test connection. Jukto asks Google Tag Manager whether the saved values work and shows whether it worked and, if not, what Google Tag Manager answered. The test uses the saved values, so save first.
- 4
Turn on
Press Turn on. Until then your website does not use it. Turn off stops it again and your saved values stay.
- 5
Publish your container
Inside Tag Manager add your tags (for example a GA4 tag) and Publish the container. Unpublished changes are not on your store.
- 6
Check with Preview
In Tag Manager press Preview and enter your live store address. Use Tag Assistant to see the container load and the data layer events appear as you browse.
Common errors#
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| the Container ID looks like GTM-XXXXXXX | You pasted something else. Copy the code that starts with GTM- from the top of the workspace. |
| container id format OK (GTM has no connection check) | This is the normal good answer. Use Preview in Tag Manager to see that the container really loads. |
| Preview does not connect to my store | Check that the integration is turned on and that you entered the address of your live store, not the editor preview. |
| Analytics counts visits twice | Jukto loads GA4 only when no container is on, so this happens if you also added a GA4 tag by hand. Keep one: the GA4 tag in the container. |
